Maria Shaw's StarScopes Newsletter

Hello Everyone! Happy Easter!

There's a few interesting things happening astrologically in the near future. First mercury goes retrograde on April 6 and until the 29th of the month. See the last update sent March 24 on my site's archives for more info on this. On April 19 we have a solar eclipse in late degree Aries. Eclipses always shake things up in our lives. Most signs affected will be Aries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn and those Taurus born in late April.

On May 4th there's a powerful lunar eclipse in Scorpio. Most affected; Scorpio, Taurus, Leo and Aquarius. But you need to get your astrological chart to see where the eclipse falls for you and how it affects the other planets personally for you. Read the chapter on Eclipses in my book The Enchanted Soul for more detailed info.

Saturn is still in the sign of Cancer until mid July 2005. This summer it will be passing through the 13th degree of Cancer. This is the same sun position in the United States and George Bush's charts too. Saturn, is the lord of Karma and brings tough challenges, restrictions and problems to overcome. Just ask anybody you know born between June 22 - July 22 and they'll tell you what they've been going through. Especially those born in June and early July! Back in the 70's, which was the last transit of Saturn in cancer, we saw the fall of Richard Nixon. He was a Capricorn and Saturn opposed his sun but still conjuncted the United State's chart so it will be interesting to see what happens this summer and throughout the next 15 months.

Another interesting phenomena is that the planet Venus will be passing across the face of the sun on June 8th. This is the first time this has happened since 1882. I am hoping to make time to write an more in-depth article for you by June about this amazing astrological occurrence.

Nate Banks at Maria's Goddess Gathering
By Trudy Bowler

With spring just around the corner many people are thinking about planting flowers, getting in shape for swimsuit season and planning their summer vacation. Unfortunately with warmer temperatures also seems to come in increase in crime. As the weather becomes more pleasant citizens become more relaxed in their day to day activities and become less aware of what is around them. This sense of security and unawareness all too often leaves them vulnerable to a criminal seeking a victim.

The general consensus of law enforcement for the rise in crime during the warmer months seems to be increased activity. People are out and about, shopping, walking, sight seeing and eating lunch. The greater number of people in itself brings a greater number of crimes. In the winter a criminal is prone to leave foot prints and other evidence behind which aids the police in tracking them, once the snow is gone, foot prints and tire tracks do not get left behind quite as easily. A crowed street is much easier to get lost in than one that is abandoned. Unfortunately for the potential victim of a crime, all this activity often causes a crime in progress to go un-noticed by others.

Seventh degree Black belt, Sensei-Teacher Nathan Banks believes that being unaware of one's surroundings is the biggest mistakes people make when protecting themselves from becoming a statistic. Banks Sensei first discovered his passion for Ju-Jitsu while stationed with the military in Japan from 1967-1969. The gentle natured Carrolton resident seems more like an adored Grandfather than the highest ranking black belt in the United States today.

For many years Banks Sensei, as he is known to his students, had to keep his love for this art and his passion for teaching on the back burner in order to make a living and raise his family. Now, retired from General Motors, this gentle man is now able to dedicate all of his time to sharing his talent, knowledge and over 30 years of experience with others. For Banks Sensei his passion is to offer skills that can help others keep themselves safe.

Unlike many Martial Arts courses this course offers techniques that one can learn in fifteen minutes and apply them. His goal is to allow a smaller woman to protect herself in any given situation. Sho Bu Do Ju-Jitsu offers techniques that do not recognize a larger attacker. The skills that one learns in these classes allows a small person to use a larger persons momentum against them, this alone makes it ideal for women, those with physical disabilities and young people. This is a must for people of all ages who want to protect themselves against unwanted attackers. Banks Sensei explains: "For many years women were told to not fight back when assaulted.

About 15 years ago the FBI and police realized this was not working. Those that did not fight back; did not survive. While those that fought lived through the experience." This course empowers women to not only fight back but to stay alive in the course of a crime.

The old adage "Those who can't teach" have never met Banks Sensei. He teaches with a very clear desire to pass on the knowledge, the skill and the love he has of this art. His passion cannot be missed as he speaks of his time in Japan. His love for the culture, the people and the country has called him back ten times over the years. When asked about his love for the art of Ju-jitsu and the country he describes smiles and says "It like the love a man has for a woman." Without question, that woman would most certainly have been the love of this man's life.

Banks Sensei teaches a little known style of Ju-jitsu. Sho-bu-do is defined as the systematic study of the process of controlling a person, with or without injury. This joint locking technique enables even a very small individual to protect themselves in an attack situation even if they are taken by surprise or from behind.

Banks Sensei is now offering a self defense class and demonstration free to the community. You will find him joining Maria Shaw's Psychic Fair at Under The Sun on Euclid, April 18th, from 1-2 PM as well as in Saginaw at the Hampton Inn on April 25 for The Goddess Gathering. What better way to spend a Sunday Afternoon than nourishing your soul and learning to protect your physical body as well?

A fan of Banks Sensei, Maria Shaw explains why he is such a wonderful fit to her already popular fairs. "I met Nate years ago and was impressed by his sincerity and compassion for people. When he approached me about doing a workshop, I thought it was a wonderful idea. We are always looking for ways to educate and give back to the community. Nate is an expert in his field and very well educated in the Martial Arts. He is an excellent speaker. I thought doing a free seminar would be a real benefit for women of all ages who wish to strengthen their self defense skills.

Nate will be demonstrating techniques anyone can learn. Simple techniques, which can make a difference empowering women. It's all about tying together mind, body and spirit together. Something Nate does so well."

Banks Sensei also offers classes on an ongoing basis and like his self defense course they are structured for all ages or physical condition learn to protect themselves and develop self discipline. Banks Sensei explains who this course is for "Children, adults, senior citizens, people in wheel chairs, even a blind person. Anyone can learn to do this." This is a wonderful way to help anyone increase their self confidence level along with physical strength and control. Protect your loved ones and bring them to one of these wonderful workshops, give them the gift of security and protection. For more information about the free class or his courses he can be reached at 989-754-0780. To learn more about Sho Bu Do you can also visit.

Chakras 101
By Maria Shaw

At the Body, Mind and Spirit Festival April 24th at 3p.m. in Detroit, MI I'll be doing a  lecture and demonstration on working with Chakras. We have energy "points" in our body that affect our well being called chakras. They open and close and can easily get out of "whack". When you feel tired or "out of balance", your chakra may not be working properly. We've all heard the saying "disease of the body is caused by dis-ease in the mind and spirit."

Stressed spelled backwards spells desserts
(Some of us, overeat when we are stressed out)

We put food in our mouths to relieve stress but what do we do to nourish our spirit? Hopefully, we take the time to work on our spiritual side.  Remember if the mind is unsettled, the body can't rest and nothing is in balance if the spirit is well and empowered. Keeping that power and positive energy flowing throughout the body is important. One way we can do this is to work with our chakras.

Each chakra vibrates to certain colors, crystals and gemstones. Each defines a certain part of the body. Knowing what each chakra's responsibility is, helps us understand what is lacking or working in our life. For example, if the heart chakra is shut down, we may need to be more open to love. Perhaps we are hurting over a breakup in a relationship. If the heart chakra is healthy, we are able to give and receive the power of love endlessly. We  can block our energy by suppressing feelings, depleting our physical energy, not getting enough sleep and  denying our feelings. Let's take a look at each of the seven chakras individually and discover their purpose. The following information may give you clues as to which of your chakras are working properly and those that need more attention.

The Root Chakra is the first chakra aka as the grounding chakra. It runs from the base of the spine and near the pelvic bone If the root chakra is damaged or not functioning properly, the other chakras will not work. All will be shut down. You will feel unbalanced. Some people who have damaged the root chakra, will try to escape the everyday world, by using drugs, eating too much or become obsessed with work. Others just feel tired all of the time. Think of the root chakra as your foundation. If the foundation is weak, other parts of you may crumble. A balanced and healthy root chakra will provide you with much energy and vitality. You'll be excited about life. You'll feel grounded, sleep better and experience less stress.

The Sacral Chakra-The second chakra is the sacral or sex chakra. It rules the area below the belly button. While our root chakra is about our foundation, the sacral or sex chakra is about sexuality and the balance between our feminine and masculine side. Our masculine side, also known as the left side of our brain, deals with logic, ambition and male oriented issues. Our feminine side or right brain makes us aware of our creative, emotional and intuitive nature. After attaining a balanced and healthy sex chakra, a person feels like they've "got it all together". They'll feel affectionate towards others. They'll enjoy an active and healthy sex life.

The Solar Plexus is the third chakra. It can be found above the stomach, in the gut. It's what I call your gut feeling. The solar plexus is a most powerful chakra. If someone is going to steal your energy, it's going to be here. Whenever you feel threatened or in danger, the solar plexus is the first chakra to alarm you. You'll feel a gnawing or anxious energy in the pit of your stomach. If this chakra is blocked, we feel repressed and think of ourselves as victims. The pity parties set in. Nothing seems to flow and everywhere we turn, our energy or efforts are thwarted. Blockage occurs when we deny our feelings or repress them. If you are angry, let it out in a healthy way. If you are upset in a relationship, don't shut your emotions off, because you will shut down. When your solar plexus is open and secure, you can prosper in many ways. We have inner power to attain our goals and desires. We feel optimistic and energized!

The Heart Chakra is the fourth chakra. This is the center for human love! It is located at the heart. The heart chakra gives us this special gift and if used wisely, can affect our lives in more ways that imagined. First, it can help us to accept and love ourselves. Second, it helps us to create, share, give and receive love from others. People who have difficulty with the heart chakra find it hard to love or even feel loved. Some problems lead to physical ailments such as heart conditions and high blood pressure. People with heart chakra blockages may not be able to forgive or feel little compassion for others. You will often see the heart chakra closed or blocked when someone has went through a major loss of a loved one, such a death, break-up, divorce or separation.

The Throat Chakra is our fifth chakra. It can shut down when we don't communicate correctly or hold things inside that need to be released. When the throat chakra is up and running, we can speak our truths with self confidence and without hesitation. We listen well and do not judge others. You've heard people make reference to "a breakdown in communication". It's likely someone's throat chakra is not working properly! A blocked throat chakra can produce sore throats, teeth problems and swollen glands. Some feel an anxious energy and experience wild mood swings. A healthy chakra will give us the courage to speak up for our beliefs, to admit when we are wrong and listen to our inner wisdom.

The Brow Chakra is our sixth one. It's located between our eyes. It provides us with gifts of insight, vision and wisdom. It is the chakra of  "seeing", not just in physical terms but in spiritual. Here, we can learn to use our intuition. The brow chakra helps us believe in magic!  Those with a healthy brow chakra are excited about life. You'll be introduced to  true power and spirituality. People gain an attitude of "whatever happens, happens for a reason".  You become the seeker of truth. With the development of this chakra you gain much understanding. Many healers and those in holistic and intuitive professions have highly developed brow chakras.

The Crown Chakra is the highest point in our energy field. It integrates the spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional parts of us. This is the chakra that helps us connect to a higher source. Some people never develop this chakra in their lifetime. If and when it becomes developed, you will live your life based on love and peace. You will no longer crave the material possessions this world has to offer. You will devote your life to helping and teaching others on their spiritual path, much like Jesus did. You will be "enlightened" and very intuitive.

If you plan on coming to the festival on April 24th , I'll be taking everyone through an exercise to balance the chakras. If you can't make it that day, know that there are things you can do and use on your own . Here's a few things you can use as tools to help open or balance your chakras
  • Wear gem stones that relate to each chakra
  • Wear colors that relate to each chakra
  • Affirmations and visualization
  • Make an appointment with a energy/body worker
  • Meditation
  • Use Bach flower essences
We all have the ability within ourselves to feel better. We create our own ailments on some level. By understanding and working with your chakras you can help your body, mind and spirit work at optimum levels! If you do live in Michigan and are planning on attending the Body, Mind and Spirit festival, please come to my free lecture and demonstration. I will teach you how to balance your own chakras and work with your energy field.
Thanks

Problems with getting my newsletters?
We're having more and more problems with email providers blocking us, as we are suspected of sending spam around with this email letter. If you miss out on any future issues (currently AOL, .cs, worldnett.att.net members and even some MSN addresses are a huge trouble here) ask your email provider to UNBLOCK this newsletter address. AOL members need to phone the AOL Postmaster Hotline at 1-703-265-4670 or 1-888-212-5537 and ask them to get us on the whitelist. (And then they are first going to monitor our email behaviour. :-) )

Each week we are sending the non deliverables on to Rich who takes great pains in getting the email newsletter to you but, boy, it is almost becoming unmanagable with the current anti-spam politics. We're suffering both ways now. From the spam and from the blockades. Please note that if you miss out on any future issue, this may be because YOUR provider has blocked our email address. What can you do? Ask your provider to unblock this newsletter email address immediately...for this is not an unsolicited bulkmail but a much wanted one. :-)
